Abia State Sees Surge in School Enrolment Under Otti
Abia State has experienced a notable increase in public school enrolment following the implementation of a compulsory free basic education policy by Governor Alex Otti's administration. Kenechukwu Nwosu, the chairman of the Education Marshals and the governor's adviser on Basic and Secondary Education, stated that the initiative has led to a surge in enrolment across the state.
Established approximately 16 months ago, the Education Marshals aim to identify out-of-school children and facilitate their return to school. Nwosu explained that marshals enroll children in the nearest schools and then engage with their parents or guardians to understand the reasons for their absence.
The initiative also includes providing school uniforms and instructional materials to support these children. Public enlightenment campaigns have been intensified in various public spaces to educate parents on the importance of education.
The marshals are supported by the state’s harmonised task force and community stakeholders to enforce the policy effectively.
