Abia State Hospital Achieves First Successful Brain Surgery

The Abia State Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre in Umuahia achieved a significant milestone by successfully conducting its first major brain surgery. This operation was announced following a State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, stated that the surgery reflects the ongoing transformation in the state's healthcare system due to investments by the Otti administration. The Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Uche, detailed that the 19-year-old patient arrived in a deep coma, with a Glasgow Coma Scale score of six, which later dropped to five.
The patient's critical condition was due to massive bleeding compressing the brainstem, necessitating immediate surgery. Uche emphasized that referring the patient to another facility could have led to death.
The surgery involved evacuating over 100 millilitres of blood clot from the brain, and the patient has since begun to move his limbs while recovering in the Intensive Care Unit.
