Abia State Secures $250M World Bank Health Grant

Abia State will benefit from a $250 million health security grant from the World Bank, as disclosed by Commissioner Okei Kanu. This announcement followed a meeting of the state executive council chaired by Governor Alex Otti.

Kanu highlighted that the grant is part of ongoing reforms in the health sector, which have qualified Abia as a beneficiary state. Additionally, the federal government is implementing a rural emergency service maternal transport program to improve access to emergency healthcare and reduce maternal, child, and neonatal mortality rates.

Kanu also mentioned that a medical mission, in collaboration with the Nigerian Physician America, is planned for 2026, which will conduct 1,500 medical consultations and 100 specialized surgeries in the state. The health reforms in Abia have gained momentum following a review of the public financing system related to healthcare delivery by a World Bank team.

Notably, there have been no major public health concerns reported during the review period.
