World Bank Allocates $700M for Abia State Water Project

The World Bank has chosen Abia State as one of six states to benefit from a $700 million water project focused on sustaining urban and rural water supply, sanitation, and hygiene. This announcement was made by Governor Alex Otti during a state executive council meeting, where he emphasized the significance of the project in reflecting the state's growth and international confidence.

Okei Kanu, a representative, noted that the project aligns with ongoing reforms and that the state has gained recognition and sponsorship globally. Additionally, Kanu disclosed the resumption of the USAID small town wash project under new funding arrangements.

The Mercy Corps is expected to continue its work on water schemes in Ubakala and Ariaria. The Abia State Electricity Regulatory Agency has issued interim licenses to three companies as part of efforts to improve electricity supply, with a power restoration project reaching 85% completion.

Governor Otti also approved the appointment of Prof. Deka Chioma Okoropo as Chief Medical Director of the Abia State University Teaching Hospital.
