Abuja Court to Rule on Political Parties' Deregistration

On June 5, 2023, the Federal High Court in Abuja, under Justice Peter Lifu, will deliver a judgment on a suit aimed at deregistering the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Accord Party, and others for alleged breaches of constitutional requirements. The court dismissed an application for a stay of proceedings filed by the parties involved, which included politicians seeking to join the suit.

Justice Lifu noted that allowing the stay would cause hardship, especially as political parties are expected to submit candidate names for upcoming elections. The court emphasized that the Supreme Court has cautioned against granting undue stays.

The plaintiff, represented by Yakubu Abdullahi Ruba, argued that the political parties failed to meet constitutional requirements regarding electoral performance. The Attorney General of the Federation, Abdullahi Abdulrahman, supported the action to ensure compliance with constitutional provisions.

The case involves several political parties and is marked as FHC/ABJ/CS/2637/2026.
