AGF Supports Lawsuit for Deregistration of Political Parties

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) has expressed support for a lawsuit aimed at the deregistration of several political parties, including the African Democratic Congress, Accord, Action Alliance, Action Peoples Party, and Zenith Labour Party. This legal action, filed in the Federal High Court in Abuja under suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/2637/2026, alleges that these parties have breached constitutional provisions.

The AGF's notice, filed pursuant to Order 15 Rule 1 of the Federal High Court Civil Procedure Rules 2019, admits the plaintiff's suit to the extent that it constitutes a constitutional responsibility of the AGF. The AGF argues that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has failed to deregister these non-performing political parties, which undermines the electoral process and violates the constitutional duty to maintain a functional electoral system.

The AGF emphasizes that access to justice is a fundamental aspect of democracy and that the case aims to reinforce constitutional supremacy and accountability.
