Nigeria's Gas Reserves: A Catalyst for Economic Growth

At the Niger State AKK Business Development Forum in Minna, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, stated that Nigeria has over 200 trillion cubic feet of proven natural gas reserves, making it the largest in Africa and ninth globally. He highlighted the importance of utilizing this gas for domestic power generation and manufacturing, particularly in cement production.

Idris expressed the federal government's goal to leverage gas as a catalyst for industrial growth, energy access, and job creation. He described the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano Gas Pipeline as a strategic national economic corridor that will enhance domestic gas utilization and create thousands of jobs.

Additionally, he discussed the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative, which aims to convert petrol and diesel vehicles to gas, offering a cleaner and more affordable transportation option. Despite the initiative's benefits, progress has been slow due to a lack of funding and insufficient conversion centers.
