ACPN Calls for Enhanced Support for Community Pharmacies

The Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN) called for increased financial, regulatory, and institutional support from the Federal and state governments to enhance community pharmacies and improve access to affordable medicines during its 45th Annual National Scientific Conference in Abuja. Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, described community pharmacists as essential frontline healthcare providers who can help address issues of medicine affordability, especially for vulnerable populations.

He noted the government's suspension of import duties and taxes on pharmaceutical inputs to lower production costs. Akume acknowledged ongoing challenges in accessing affordable medicines, particularly in rural areas, and urged pharmacists to combat counterfeit drugs and participate in health initiatives.

Amos Magaji, representing the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State, advocated for stronger partnerships between government and pharmacists, including integrating community pharmacies into health insurance schemes. The ACPN also expressed concern over the migration of over 9,500 pharmacists from Nigeria, calling for measures to retain skilled professionals.
