Atiku Abubakar Warns of Democracy Threat from ADC Ruling

Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President of Nigeria, expressed alarm over a court ruling that ordered the deregistration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing it as a significant threat to democracy in Nigeria. In a statement delivered by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Frank Shaibu, Atiku noted that the ruling contradicts a subsisting order from the Court of Appeal, which had granted a stay on further proceedings in the matter.

He highlighted that the judgment raises serious concerns about the respect for the hierarchy of courts and the rule of law. Atiku accused the Tinubu administration of employing authoritarian tactics to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections.

He urged ADC members to remain steadfast in their support for democracy and called on the judiciary, civil society, and media to resist attempts to undermine democratic institutions for partisan advantage.
