During Adeniyi's visit, he showed respect by prostrating, a Yoruba cultural gesture, but Ciroma, who had a history of Northern Nigerian supremacy ideology, took offense and demanded that Adeniyi get up. Ciroma, who was also the Editor of the New Nigeria newspaper and later the Governor of the Central Bank, was part of a powerful Northern nationalist group known as the Kaduna mafia, which emerged after the death of Sir Ahmadu Bello.
