FG Urges Pastoralists to Embrace Modern Livestock Farming

The Federal Government of Nigeria, represented by Minister of Livestock Development Dr. Idi Maiha, has called on pastoralists across the country to adopt sedentary livestock production and modern farming practices.

This initiative was announced during an interactive session with the Miyetti Allah Fulani Development Association in Abuja. Dr.

Maiha emphasized that continuing the migratory practice of livestock herding is no longer feasible due to population growth, climate change, and the expansion of crop cultivation, which has made natural grazing lands increasingly scarce. The government plans to develop 417 grazing reserves nationwide to encourage pastoralists to settle and adopt modern livestock practices.

Dr. Maiha outlined that ranching within designated grazing areas would promote peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders.

The government aims to transform traditional livestock management practices, improve productivity, and ensure the sector significantly contributes to the Gross Domestic Product. The initiative also seeks to create jobs for millions of youth and enhance the livestock value chain.
