Pastoralists Support Tinubu's Livestock Transformation Agenda

On May 14, 2026, pastoralists, represented by the Miyetti Allah Fulani association, committed to supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's livestock transformation agenda and the national ranching policy during an engagement in Abuja. The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, noted that the delegation's visit demonstrated growing confidence in the federal government's efforts to modernize the livestock sector, moving from subsistence animal husbandry to a modern ranching system.

The ministry plans to rehabilitate grazing reserves, promote pasture cultivation, and enhance animal health management systems. A pilot artificial insemination program targeting 1,000 to 3,000 animals nationwide is set to commence, aimed at improving local breeds.

The ministry will also resume annual livestock vaccination exercises against diseases such as CBPP, PPR, anthrax, and foot-and-mouth disease. Permanent Secretary Dr. Chinyer Ijeoma Akujobi emphasized the importance of direct engagement with pastoralists on issues affecting their livelihoods, while Alhaji Abubakar Suleiman praised the establishment of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development as a historic milestone for pastoral communities in Nigeria.
