AFN Welcomes Favor Ofili's Potential Return to Nigeria

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), led by President Tonobok Okowa, has indicated openness to Favor Ofili's return after her request to switch allegiance to Turkey was rejected by World Athletics. Ofili, a sprinter who last represented Nigeria at the Paris 2024 Olympics, had sought to change her nationality due to dissatisfaction with the handling of her career by Nigerian athletics authorities.

However, the Turkish Athletics Federation did not approve her application, which was one of eleven submissions reviewed. World Athletics emphasized the need to maintain the integrity of national competitions and discourage the recruitment of foreign athletes at the expense of local talent.

Okowa expressed delight at the possibility of Ofili's return, highlighting the importance of unity and support for Nigeria's top track talents. He stated that Ofili's return could significantly boost Nigeria's sprinting prospects, especially ahead of major international competitions, and reaffirmed the AFN's commitment to fostering a supportive environment for athletes.
