AFN Supports Ofili After World Athletics Blocks Transfer

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has expressed support for sprinter Ofili following World Athletics' decision to block her transfer to Turkey. Ofili had sought to switch allegiance due to dissatisfaction with local authorities managing her career.

However, World Athletics' nation review panel ruled that her request, submitted to the Turkish Athletic Federation, was not approved due to broader regulatory issues and concerns about athlete recruitment practices. The panel found that Ofili's grievances did not outweigh these concerns.

Ofili last represented Nigeria at the Paris 2024 Olympics and has acquired Turkish citizenship, signing a long-term contract indicating plans to relocate. Despite the ruling, she remains eligible to compete for Nigeria in individual international meets, including the Diamond League.

Turkey intends to appeal the decision through legal channels, as reported by Jamaican journalist Kayon Raynor, who noted that the ruling prevents Ofili from representing Turkey in major championships, including the Olympics and World Championships.
