Nigeria's Power Reforms Central to Global Energy Security

On Tuesday, Joseph Tegbe, the Minister of Power, delivered a keynote address at the Middle East Energy 2026 Leadership Summit in Dubai, focusing on the theme “Energy Security and the Effect of Geopolitics.” He asserted that Nigeria's power reforms serve as a model for developing economies to enhance global energy security amidst geopolitical fragmentation. Tegbe highlighted that energy security in 2026 transcends mere hydrocarbon reserves, emphasizing the importance of a resilient energy system.

He cited Nigeria's over 200 trillion cubic feet of proven gas reserves and its consistent LNG supply to Europe and Asia as pivotal to global energy discussions. The Minister referred to the Electricity Act of 2023 as a transformative reform, which ended federal monopoly and established 37 emerging electricity markets under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's leadership.

Tegbe proposed four key strategies for energy security, advocating for diversification, strategic seriousness towards grid infrastructure, affordability as a security issue, and an orderly global energy transition responsive to individual nations' circumstances.
