Nigeria Seeks UAE Investment for Power Infrastructure Boost

Energy experts have called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to attract funding from the United Arab Emirates to bolster the country's electricity infrastructure. This appeal followed Nigeria's participation in the Middle East Energy 2026 event in Dubai, where Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe underscored the nation's commitment to enhancing energy security.
The UAE has earmarked renewable energy, infrastructure, and digital innovation as key investment areas in Africa, with investments totaling approximately $71.32 billion in Sub-Saharan Africa from 2021 to 2025. Uket Obonga, National Secretary of the Network for Electricity Consumers Advocacy of Nigeria, suggested that Nigeria could target about 10 percent of the UAE's $70 billion commitment to renewable energy, equating to around $7 billion.
He emphasized that such funding could significantly improve Nigeria's electricity infrastructure if effectively utilized. Obonga urged the government to transparently communicate the intended use of any funds attracted from the UAE.
