Africa's Monkeypox Emergency Declared Over by CDC Chief

The Africa Centr Diseas Control chief, Jean Kaseya, declared that Africa is no longer facing a monkeypox emergency, with the viral infection remaining endemic but not a public health emergency. The World Health Organ had previously declared monkeypox a global health emergency in September 2024.

The region saw a decline in confirmed cases by 60% and a decrease in deaths among infected individuals by 2.6% to 0.6% by late 2025. The statement lifting the public health emergency status signifies a transition to sustained response and efforts towards eliminating monkeypox in Africa, with countries like DRC, Guinea, and Madagascar being affected.
