Dangote Plans 1,000MW LNG Power Plant in Kenya

Dangote Industries is in discussions with the Kenyan government to develop a 1,000-megawatt liquefied natural gas (LNG) power plant in Lamu, Kenya, as part of its strategy to expand its industrial presence in East Africa following the completion of its $16 billion refinery project in Lagos. Initially, the plan was for a smaller facility, but the Kenyan authorities are advocating for a larger installation to mitigate electricity shortages, enhance industrial power supply, and lower energy costs.

The proposed plant will utilize LNG to ensure a stable electricity supply, complementing Kenya's renewable energy investments. A crucial aspect of the project is securing a reliable gas supply from Tanzania, which has substantial natural gas reserves.

This gas could be transported via a pipeline or LNG shipments. The project is expected to support Kenya's electricity diversification efforts and is strategically located within the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport corridor.

Before construction, Dangote and the Kenyan government must finalize technical discussions, including agreements on gas supply and electricity purchases.
