After decades of reforms, Local Government autonomy still a mirage

Decades of reforms have failed to grant local governments in Nigeria the autonomy they seek, as highlighted by the recent seizure of monthly revenue allocations by the Osun State Government. The issue began in November 2022 when a Federal High Court nullified the October 2022 local government elections in Osun State, citing violations of electoral laws.

While the Court of Appeal later reinstated the sacked APC local government chairmen, the PDP-led state government disagreed with the ruling. Legal experts have offered conflicting interpretations of the judgment, with the Attorney General of the Federation supporting the seizure of funds based on his legal opinion.

This ongoing struggle for autonomy reflects a larger systemic issue in Nigeria, where local governments lack the independence to operate effectively. Despite past reform efforts, the current situation underscores the need for genuine local government autonomy to ensure proper governance at the grassroots level.
