Why Fashola Thinks LG Autonomy is Unrealistic Without Reform

Former Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola, has expressed skepticism about the feasibility of granting full autonomy to local governments without significant reforms. Fashola highlighted that the Fourth Schedule of the Constitution assigns various responsibilities to local governments, which are currently under state government control.

He argued that the existing structure necessitates collaboration rather than complete independence for local governments. Fashola referenced past instances of local councils defaulting on salary and pension payments, leading to the establishment of state joint local government accounts for financial supervision.

While the Supreme Court granted financial autonomy to local councils in July 2024, Fashola noted legal experts are divided on whether this aligns with constitutional provisions. He emphasized the need for stronger local councils but maintained that autonomy within the current legal framework may require substantial constitutional reform.

Fashola's remarks have reignited the debate on the necessity of state control over local governments and the importance of accountability.
