Akpabio's Senate Nears End with 1,500 Bills Passed

The 10th Senate of Nigeria, under the leadership of Senator Godswill Akpabio, is entering its winding down phase as the next elections approach in January 2027. Akpabio, who took office on June 13, 2023, had promised to prioritize the aspirations of Nigerians and ensure rigorous oversight of executive actions.

As of August, the Senate has passed 1,500 bills, while the House of Representatives has passed 2,000, totaling 3,500 bills across both chambers. Of these, 373 bills have been jointly passed for presidential assent, with President Bola Tinubu having assented to 72, leaving 301 bills pending.

Observers note that while the volume of legislation is commendable, the lack of action on the remaining bills raises concerns about their relevance and the effectiveness of the Senate's legislative agenda.
