INEC Chair Amupitan Prepares for Crucial Elections

Professor Joash Amupitan, the current chair of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), is preparing for significant elections scheduled for June 20, 2023. This will mark the first time INEC conducts six legislative elections across five zones in Nigeria.

The elections include the Ekiti State governorship election, where incumbent Governor Biodun Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will contest against candidates from 13 political parties. Additionally, three Senate seats became vacant due to the deaths of Okei Ezea (Enugu North), Godiya Akwashiki (Nasarawa North), and Barinada Mpigi (Rivers South East), while Ondo South's seat was vacated following Jimoh Ibrahim's resignation.

Amupitan has emphasized the importance of credible elections, stating that 93% of results from the Anambra governorship election were viewed through the INEC portal. He has pledged to ensure that votes will count and warned candidates against character assassination during the campaign.
