AGF Supports Deregistration of Non-Compliant Political Parties

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Alex Enumah, has aligned with former legislators in a legal effort to deregister five political parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and All Progressives Party (APP), due to alleged non-compliance with constitutional requirements. The suit, filed by the Nation Forum for Former Legislators (NFFL) at the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeks to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to remove these parties from its registry.

The AGF's involvement, represented by a legal team led by Prof. J.O.

Olatokun, emphasizes the need for adherence to Section 225 of the 1999 Constitution, which mandates that parties must secure at least 25% of votes in presidential elections to maintain their registration. The AGF argues that the continued existence of non-performing parties burdens public resources and undermines electoral integrity.

The case has been adjourned until early May for further hearings.
