AGF Fagbemi Seeks Deregistration of Non-Performing Parties

The Attorney General of the Federation, Fagbemi, has filed a suit in the Federal High Court seeking the deregistration of four political parties: Action Alliance (AA), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Accord Party, and Zenith Labour Party, along with Action Peoples Party. Fagbemi argues that these parties have failed to win electoral seats and do not satisfy the minimum threshold required under Section 225A of the Nigerian Constitution.

He emphasized that retaining non-performing political parties would inflate ballot burdens and misuse public funds, complicating electoral administration and undermining the constitutional intent of Section 225A. The National Forum for Former Legislators, represented by counsel Yakubu Ruba, supports this action, seeking judicial interpretation of the constitutional provisions governing the registration and recognition of political parties in Nigeria.
