Nigeria's NSW Phase 1 Launch to Cut Port Delays by 73%

The Federal Government of Nigeria is set to launch Phase 1 of the National Single Window (NSW) initiative on Thursday, which is designed to address 73% of delays in seaport processes. This initiative aims to create a single integrated digital platform that connects relevant government agencies involved in trade regulation and cargo clearance, thereby simplifying trade processes and eliminating duplications.

The current cargo dwell time at Nigerian ports averages between 18 to 21 days, significantly higher than the global average of 4 days, leading to increased business costs and reduced competitiveness. The NSW will introduce electronic submissions for licenses, permits, and certificates, centralizing risk management and enhancing transparency in electronic payments.

The upgrade of Apapa Port, which handles 70% of Nigeria's trade, is expected to complement the NSW by improving cargo discharge and reducing congestion. The launch of NSW Phase 1 coincides with ongoing efforts to modernize Nigeria's trade ecosystem and improve overall economic growth by 2025.
