AI Breakthrough Predicts Vision Loss Early

Researchers have developed an artificial intelligence system that can predict keratoconus, a condition causing the cornea to bulge, leading to vision loss. This breakthrough, presented at the 43rd Congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, could revolutionize eye care by identifying patients needing urgent treatment to prevent vision deterioration.

Keratoconus affects 1 in 350 people and typically worsens in adulthood. The AI system analyzes eye images and patient data to accurately forecast treatment needs, potentially reducing the need for corneal transplants.

The study involved patients at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, showcasing the system's effectiveness in monitoring and managing keratoconus cases.
