AI Threatens Learning in Nigerian Universities, Ex-VC Warns

Abdallah Adamu, the former Vice Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), expressed concerns regarding the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on effective learning in Nigerian universities. Speaking in Abuja during the 80th birthday celebration and book presentation for Emeritus Professor Godwin Sogolo, Adamu highlighted that the rapid adoption of AI tools is altering students' learning habits.

He noted that students often resort to AI platforms to generate responses for assignments, undermining genuine learning and academic integrity. Adamu criticized the lack of proper regulation of AI in educational environments, stating that universities are struggling to develop new teaching and assessment strategies.

He emphasized the urgent need for government support to help institutions adapt to these emerging technologies. Additionally, Adamu linked the challenges posed by AI to broader systemic issues, including inadequate infrastructure and poor learning environments, which further weaken student engagement.

He urged the federal government to accelerate reforms in higher education beyond just staff welfare to safeguard the future of education in Nigeria.
