AON Warns Unions Against Further Disruptions in Aviation

The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) issued a warning to aviation unions, stating that any further disruption of airline operations would result in a nationwide shutdown of all domestic flights. This warning came after a violent incident on August 11, 2026, which disrupted operations at Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

The AON condemned the actions of union members who blocked access to Air Peace’s departure terminals and engaged in violence against airline staff, causing injuries. The disruption led to significant financial losses, with Air Peace reporting over 70 affected flights and losses exceeding N2 billion, while United Nigeria Airlines had more than 30 flights impacted, affecting around 13,000 passengers.

The AON expressed concerns about the implications for investor confidence in Nigeria's aviation sector and called for an immediate review of airport security procedures, highlighting the vulnerabilities exposed by the incident.
