Aviation Unions Disrupt Flights at Nigerian Airports

On August 11, 2026, aviation unions conducted picketing at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, primarily targeting Air Peace, which led to significant disruptions in domestic flight operations. This action raised concerns among lessors and international financial institutions regarding the safety standards and regulatory policies of Nigerian airlines.

Nuhu Adam, an industry analyst and former General Manager of Business Development at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), stated that the picketing indicated a breakdown in safety, security, and regulatory frameworks within Nigeria's aviation sector. He noted that the disruption violated several International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) policies, including those related to the safety of operations and security measures.

Adam emphasized that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) failed to prevent the disruption, marking a significant regulatory oversight failure.
