Nigerian Cargo Agents Halt Operations Over Tariff Hike at Murtala Muhammed Airport

Cargo agents at Murtala Muhammed Airport staged a protest against the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) over a planned increase in cargo tariffs. The agents, represented by the Africa Association of Professional Freight Forwarders and Logistics, received a letter from FAAN on January 27, 2026, notifying them of the new tariff regime set to take effect on February 2, 2026.

The proposed tariff hike from N7 to N25 per kilogram, representing a 257% increase, was met with resistance from the agents. FAAN suspended the implementation of the new rates following the agents' protest.

Despite this, FAAN's spokesperson, Henri Agbebir, indicated that the agency was not backing down on the tariff increase. Cargo agents engaged in discussions with Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc and Skyway Aviation Handling Company Plc to address the matter.
