United Nigeria Airlines' COO Discusses Flight Delays

During the Aviation Day of the 23rd Akwaaba African Travel Market held in Lagos, Adedayo Olawuyi, the Chief Commercial Officer of United Nigeria Airlines, addressed the causes of flight delays and cancellations. He identified airport congestion, inadequate infrastructure, and adverse weather as primary factors.

Olawuyi illustrated the congestion issue by comparing it to living in a cramped apartment with limited parking, explaining that aircraft often face delays due to multiple operators at the airport. He provided a specific example of a flight that was delayed from 6:59 a.m. to 7:38 a.m. due to ramp congestion.

Additionally, he mentioned technical challenges with aircraft and weather-related issues, such as a flight from Lagos to Kano that had to return to Lagos due to a thunderstorm disabling the runway lighting in Kano. Olawuyi emphasized that while airlines take responsibility for certain delays, many factors are beyond their control, particularly in Nigeria's aviation sector.
