Fire at Lagos Airport Disrupts Air Traffic Control Systems

On Monday, a fire outbreak at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos destroyed critical air-to-ground communications equipment, as revealed by Farouk Umar, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA). The incident severely disrupted airport operations, necessitating the activation of emergency backup systems to sustain flight operations.

Umar disclosed that the fire caused significant damage, affecting multiple aviation installations and prompting a large-scale emergency response. The Nigerian aviation authority is expected to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the losses and begin restoration efforts.

Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, visited the site to confirm the extent of the damage. Despite the challenges, Umar reassured passengers and airline partners that Nigeria's airspace remains safe and that NAMA is prepared to address such unfortunate incidents.

No lives were lost during the fire, which occurred in the afternoon and led to the temporary halt of inbound flights.
