NAMA Activates Mobile Control Tower at Lagos Airport

The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has activated a mobile control tower at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos after a fire incident severely damaged the old terminal's control tower. The fire, which occurred three weeks prior, rendered the control tower inoperable, necessitating urgent action.

NAMA quickly sought an alternative by moving a mobile control tower from a fire station. The deployment was completed on March 18, 2026, with the mobile tower designed to meet Nigeria's unique operational demands and incorporate local innovations for enhanced efficiency and safety.

Teres Ihenacho, Director of Safety and Electronic Engineering Services, highlighted the agency's commitment to ensuring safe air navigation services. The mobile tower will undergo test runs before full operational status is achieved.

NAMA also plans to deploy a second mobile control tower to cover additional runway operations, collaborating with various aviation stakeholders to ensure optimal safety and operational redundancy.
