Court Warns FCCPC's Tunji Bello of Contempt Sanctions

The Federal High Court in Lagos issued a contempt warning against Mr. Tunji Bello, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), for potentially breaching a court order from April 15, 2026.

The court's order restrains the FCCPC from enforcing provisions of the Digital and Electronic Online Non-Traditional Consumer Lending Regulations 2025 against members of the Wireless Application Service Providers Association of Nigeria (WASPAN) pending the determination of a substantive suit. The court has scheduled a hearing for May 15, 2026, to address the preliminary objections raised by the FCCPC.

Justice Lewis Allagoa reaffirmed that the interim injunction remains valid and that the FCCPC must comply with the court's directives. Failure to do so could result in Mr.

Bello being held in contempt and facing imprisonment. The case has significant implications for the regulation of digital credit services affecting millions of mobile subscribers in Nigeria.
