Aiyedatiwa's Controversial Re-election Plans for 2028

Lucki Aiyedatiwa, the current governor of Ondo State, has been under scrutiny regarding his potential re-election bid for 2028. Aiyedatiwa was first sworn in on December 27, 2024, following the death of his predecessor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, and was subsequently sworn in again on February 24, 2025, after winning the governorship election on November 16, 2024.

Legal interpretations of the 1999 constitutional amendment suggest that governors, including Aiyedatiwa, may not be eligible to serve more than eight years in total. However, Aiyedatiwa argues that he is eligible to contest as he did not emerge as governor through an election in 2023.

Despite his public denial of seeking re-election, he has reportedly started a campaign on social media. The president of the Progress Congress APC in Ondo State, Kin Egbuwalo, and Justice Toyin Bolaji Adegoke of the Federal High Court have been involved in discussions regarding these legal interpretations, which could impact Aiyedatiwa's political future.
