Aiyedatiwa Awaits Court Ruling on 2028 Election Eligibility

Ondo State Governor Lucki Aiyedatiwa has stated that the court will determine his eligibility to contest in the 2028 governorship election amid ongoing constitutional controversies. Aiyedatiwa was first sworn in as governor in December 2023 following the death of former governor Rotimi Akeredolu and was sworn in again in February 2025 after winning the governorship election.

The legal challenge was initiated by Dr. Akin Egbuwalo, who filed a suit in the Federal High Court seeking an interpretation of Section 137(3) of the Constitution regarding Aiyedatiwa's eligibility.

The judgment was initially scheduled for delivery on January 28; however, the lower court's ruling has been suspended pending an appeal. Aiyedatiwa expressed confidence in the court's decision and emphasized that he has not formally declared his intention to run for the election.

He also addressed the recent APC state congress, asserting that the party remains united despite grievances among members.
