Ajunwa Calls for Action to End 30-Year Olympic Gold Drought

Chioma Ajunwa, the sole individual Olympic gold medallist from Nigeria, expressed her disappointment over the country's 30-year absence of individual Olympic champions. Reflecting on her achievement at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games, where she won gold in the women's long jump with a leap of 7.12m, Ajunwa criticized the lack of proper sports structures in Nigeria.

She called on the government and sports administrators to invest in developing champions, stating that talent alone is insufficient without support and infrastructure. Ajunwa emphasized the need for action rather than mere speeches to honor her legacy, urging the identification of potential athletes across Nigeria.

She lamented the neglect of sporting heroes, citing her own experience of receiving a promised three-bedroom flat from Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu 25 years after the promise was made by former military administrator Olagunsoye Oyinlola. Ajunwa's reflections serve as a reminder of the urgent need for systemic changes in Nigerian sports.
