Onojuvwevwo Wins Nigeria's First 400m Medal Since 1994

Onojuvwevwo achieved a historic milestone by winning Nigeria's first Commonwealth Games medal in the women's 400m since 1994, securing a bronze medal at the Glasgow 2026 Games on Saturday. She finished the race with a season's best time of 51.00 seconds at Scotstoun Stadium.

This victory marks the first time a Nigerian woman has medaled in this event since Fatima Yusuf. The gold medal was won by Jamaica’s Dejanea Oakley in 50.21 seconds, while Barbados’ Sada Williams took silver, finishing just one-hundredth of a second ahead of Onojuvwevwo at 50.99 seconds.

Following the race, Onojuvwevwo expressed her happiness about the achievement, acknowledging the support from her family, coach, teammates, and Team Nigeria. She also mentioned her enjoyment of transitioning to professional athletics and her plans for upcoming competitions, including the possibility of participating in the World Championships.
