Akande Slams Plan To Hike Politicians’ Salaries, While Workers Remain Poorly Paid

Laolu Akande, in response to the plan by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to increase politicians' salaries, criticized the move as unfair when many workers in Nigeria are poorly paid. Akande, speaking on Channels Television's Inside Sources, highlighted the disparity in wages between political office holders and civil servants, calling the current wage structure in the public service warped and corrupted by financial malfeasance.

He emphasized that the minimum wage in Nigeria is insufficient to meet the basic needs of workers, pushing many into poverty. Akande argued for a comprehensive review of salaries across the board, stating that political appointees should not receive raises while other public servants are underpaid.

He rejected the notion that the government cannot afford to pay decent wages, attributing the issue to the staggering cost of corruption.
