Akpabio Defends Senate Rule Amendments Amid Criticism

Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Nigerian Senate, responded to criticism from Adams Oshiomhole regarding recent amendments to the Senate's standing rules. Akpabio's spokesman, Esem Eyiboh, issued a statement in Abuja defending the controversial amendments, which Akpabio argued were designed to strengthen the Senate as an institution rather than to protect personal interests.

He emphasized that parliamentary leadership requires a deep understanding of legislative procedures and constitutional interpretation. Akpabio rejected Oshiomhole's calls for his resignation, stating that the amendments do not unfairly affect eligibility and are not intended to exclude new entrants.

He clarified that the amendments are not retroactive and cannot invalidate previously acquired mandates. This statement came two weeks after Oshiomhole publicly demanded Akpabio's resignation, claiming that the amendments raised serious concerns about leadership ethics within the Senate.
