Oshiomhole Demands Akpabio's Resignation Over Senate Rules

Senator Adams Oshiomhole has called for the resignation of Senate President Godswill Akpabio amid controversy regarding recent amendments to the Senate's standing orders related to the election of principal officers. Oshiomhole, representing Edo North, described the proposed amendments as indicative of a moral crisis, asserting that Akpabio no longer meets the moral and procedural requirements to continue leading the Senate.

He pointed out that the amendments would allow a senator to serve as Senate President for eight consecutive years, which he argued undermines the integrity of the position. Oshiomhole noted that Akpabio's tenure had not yet reached eight years, even when combining his previous and current terms.

However, the controversial amendment was later withdrawn following a motion sponsored by the Senate Leader, which reinstated previous rules allowing senators to serve two terms and contest for principal offices under specific conditions.
