Akpeyi Praises Suzuki After Japan's Draw with Netherlands

Daniel Akpeyi, a goalkeeper for the Super Eagles, commended Japan's 23-year-old goalkeeper Zion Suzuki after Japan's 2-2 draw against the Netherlands in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Group F opener at Dalla Stadium. Akpeyi highlighted Suzuki's impressive display, which included four important saves, as a vindication of the Japan coaching staff's decision to select him over more experienced options.

Throughout the match, Suzuki remained alert and composed, making critical stops against the Dutch attack, including a sharp save from Donyel Malen shortly after kickoff. The match saw Japan come from behind twice, with goals from Keito Nakamura and Daichi Kamada, the latter equalizing in the 89th minute.

The Netherlands initially took the lead through Virgil van Dijk and later restored it with a goal from Crycencio Summerville. Bart Verbruggen, the Dutch goalkeeper, faced challenges but managed to keep the score level, earning a player rating of just three out of ten.

Japan currently sits second in Group F, behind Sweden.
