AKSU Receives NUC Approval for MBBS Program

Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) has secured approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to commence a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program from the 2026/2027 academic session, as conveyed in a letter dated September 3, 2026. This approval follows a resource verification visit by the NUC and raises the number of NUC-approved programs at AKSU to 85.

The initiative aims to enhance medical manpower development in Akwa Ibom and beyond, providing aspiring medical students with local opportunities to study Medicine and Surgery. Dr Ebi Eno Ibanga, the Registrar of AKSU, expressed gratitude to the Akwa Ibom State Government and stakeholders for their support.

The approval is a significant milestone for Vice-Chancellor Prof Otoabasi Akpan, who has overseen the expansion of the university's academic offerings since his appointment in August 2025. Dr Nsikak Udo, a medical professional, noted that this development would help address the shortage of doctors in the state and Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of local medical training.
