Akwa Ibom Assembly Moves to Regulate Bride Prices

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has initiated steps to regulate bride prices and marriage requirements in response to growing concerns about their financial burden on couples, particularly the youth. During a plenary session on Thursday, Hon.

Selinah Isotuk Ukpatu, representing Ikot Abasi Eastern Obolo, presented a motion emphasizing the importance of marriage as a social institution and the need to address the increasing commercialization of traditional marriage rites in Akwa Ibom. The Assembly noted that the rising costs associated with bride prices and extensive marriage requirements have become significant obstacles for families and young couples, delaying marriages due to economic hardships.

The motion received unanimous support, leading to a call for the Akwa Ibom State Traditional Rulers Council to review the existing bride price structure and marriage requirements. The Assembly directed the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to collaborate with traditional rulers and local government authorities to ensure compliance with the approved framework.

Additionally, a public sensitization campaign will be launched to educate residents on the economic and social implications of excessive bride prices.
