Akwa Ibom Chief Judge Frees 63 Inmates Amid Overcrowding

On Wednesday, the Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Ekaet F. Obot, announced the release of 63 inmates from Uyo Custody Centre, following a detailed review of their cases.

This latest release brings the total number of inmates freed during this exercise to 100, which includes an earlier release of 37 inmates from Ikot Abasi, Eket, and Ikot Ekpen custody centers. The decision to release these inmates was based on input from the Director of Public Prosecutions, court clerks, and medical personnel.

Among those released, 39 were granted pardon on special grounds, including cases involving missed files and lack of diligent prosecution. Notably, 20 inmates suffering from serious health conditions, such as Godwin Franci Etim battling tuberculosis, were also released for proper medical care.

The Chief Judge emphasized the importance of routine inspections of correctional facilities, highlighting the overcrowded conditions and the need for legal compliance to avoid prolonging detention without due process.
