Akwa Ibom Doctors to Sue EFCC for N1bn Over Raid

The Akwa Ibom State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) announced plans to initiate a N1 billion lawsuit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following an alleged assault on its member, Professor Eyo Ekp, during a raid at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) on Tuesday. The NMA described the incident as a violation of the sanctity of the hospital environment, stating that Professor Ekp, a cardiothoracic surgeon, was physically assaulted, handcuffed, and left bleeding after EFCC operatives attempted to verify medical reports related to a suspect.

NMA Chairman Professor Aniekan Peter condemned the raid, asserting that the hospital should not be subjected to violent operations by security agencies. The association demands an apology for the affected doctors and has stated that no medical services will be provided to EFCC officials until their demands are met.

The NMA characterized the raid as barbaric and inhumane, emphasizing the need for respect within healthcare settings.
