EFCC Faces Backlash Over Hospital Disruption in Uyo

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has come under fire following an operation at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital in Akwa Ibom State, where they allegedly disrupted medical services and assaulted medical personnel. Panic ensued as hospital staff, patients, and visitors fled the premises during the operation, which aimed to verify a medical report linked to an ongoing fraud investigation involving several microfinance banks, including the University of Uyo Microfinance Bank.

Professor Eyo Ekp, the Deputy Chairman of the hospital's Medical Advisory Committee and a cardiothoracic surgeon, was reportedly arrested during the incident. The Akwa Ibom chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) condemned the EFCC's actions, describing them as intimidation and announced an indefinite strike in response.

The EFCC denied the allegations of brutality, stating that their operation was conducted lawfully. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for an investigation into the EFCC's conduct.
