Akwa Ibom Ex-Speaker Aniekan Uko Resigns from Role

Aniekan Uko, the former Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, has officially resigned from his role as Special Adviser on Legislative Affairs to Governor Umo Eno. In a formal communication addressed to the governor, Uko expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to serve but noted that evolving circumstances necessitated his decision to step down in order to focus on his future political ambitions.

His resignation is seen as a signal of the intensifying political dynamics within the state, particularly as the race for various electoral positions heats up ahead of the upcoming elections. Uko represents the Ibesikpo Asutan state constituency and has indicated plans to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives, commonly referred to as the Green Chamber, in the June 2025 elections.

This move follows earlier directives from Governor Eno cautioning political appointees against resigning to seek elective office, which were later reversed amid widespread dissatisfaction from aggrieved aspirants who argued that such arrangements undermine democratic principles and the electorate's right to freely choose their representatives.
