Alake Condemns Tragedy of Artisanal Miners in CAR

Dr. Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development in Nigeria, expressed his condolences regarding the deaths of more than 100 artisanal miners following the collapse of a gold-mining site in Zamboye, Central African Republic. In a statement released on Friday by Lara Owoeye, Alake described the incident as a profound tragedy that should concern the continent.

He conveyed condolences on behalf of the African Minerals Strategy Group (AMSG) to the Central African Republic's government and the families of the victims. Alake highlighted the dangers of illegal and unregulated mining, which not only deprives nations of revenue but also endangers lives.

He called for a balanced approach to artisanal mining, advocating for legal and safe operations while enforcing laws against illegal practices. Alake stressed that the tragedy should not become just another statistic and emphasized the need for action to protect miners and ensure that Africa’s mineral wealth benefits communities.
