Nigeria and Italy Launch $5 Billion Education Campaign

Nigeria, co-hosting with Italy, played a significant role in the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) 2026–2030 replenishment campaign, aiming to raise US$5 billion for education in over 100 low-income and lower-middle-income countries. The event, titled “Multiply Possibility: A New Era for Education Financing,” took place in New York during the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, stated that Nigeria's involvement reflects a commitment to expanding educational opportunities globally. He highlighted that Nigeria has received approximately US$800 million in GPE grants since joining the partnership.

The campaign aims to improve access to quality education and strengthen education systems. Alausa noted that the decision to co-host was influenced by a request from GPE Board Chair Dr Jakaya Kikwete to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in January 2025, who accepted and committed to the initiative, showcasing the administration's focus on education and human-capital development.
